Our Partner School in Cite Soleil

September 30, 2009

I’m (John Engle) in Haiti for several days focusing on our partner school in Cite Soleil. It’s so encouraging to be able to come and go into a part of Port au Prince–an extremely poor neighborhood with nearly a half million people–that was too dangerous to visit for several years. It was run by violent gangs. Now, even though it’s poor, it’s safe. Schools are functioning, there’s commercial activity, and police, who had not entered for years, are circulating freely.

Haiti Partners is privileged to be partnering with Cite Soleil Community School where 200 children from desperately poor families receive a quality education along with a nutritious meal every day. We’re currently working on a video that tells the school’s story. It’s an extraordinary story so stay tuned.

“Schools Kill Creativity” by Sir Ken Robinson

September 18, 2009

A brilliant and hilarious presentation by Sir Ken Robinson. My colleagues and I share with him the belief that creativity is frequently suffocated in school. Haiti Partners’ approach to teacher training and education places emphasis on helping children discover their voice, their ideas, and their potential.
