XO Laptop Helps Healing
August 29, 2010
Haiti Partners participated in a pilot with Waveplace and OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) of 200 xo laptops in April and May of this year. Last week I (John Engle) visited with about 20 students from our various partner schools to see how they’re progressing. Respecting one of OLPC’s principles, all students in our partner schools keep the laptops so that they can continue learning.
I was amazed to see progress they’ve made in using them: typing, doing illustrations, taking and manipulating photos, creating electronic books, doing math, etc.
I was also deeply touched by “Lordz” story. (pictured below) Her mother was killed on December 26, 2009. Stabbed by her father. “I moved in with my godmother. Then, the earthquake destroyed our home several weeks later. When I become overwhelmed by sadness I grab my laptop and my tears go away.”
Short video in front of Haiti Partners partner school, Cabois Community School. It was destroyed by earthquake and thanks to Zyman Foundation and generosity of others, construction of new building is almost complete.

Progress on Cabois Learning Center
August 19, 2010
I (John Engle) was pleased to see construction progress today at Cabois Learning Center. But we have a challenge. Can you help? In the video you’ll see that we have a very large space that we need to subdivide into about 8 classrooms. The challenge is that we want the dividers to be easily removable so that the entire space can be used for community wide meetings and events. Any suggestions?

More Than Education at Cabois
July 17, 2010
I visited Cabois Learning Center yesterday and witnessed first hand how this building is already serving as a shelter. The rain poured and crews working on the roads came in for shelter. Gerald, school administrator, also shared how the micro-credit, that families of students are receiving, is helping them to rebuild.

Cabois Community School Breaks Ground
May 1, 2010
I (John Engle) was encouraged to see that all the rubble from Cabois Community School has been removed and used to improve roads and that the foundation has been dug for a new Cabois Community Learning Center/Shelter. The locals are doing a great job and they along with Haiti Partners couldn’t be more grateful to Zyman Foundation, who is funding the new Learning Center. It was an encouraging day today as another organizations was also distributing sheets of tin for roofs along with wood for construction. I’ll continue regular video updates on building.

Parent Involvement at Cabois School
March 16, 2010
Some good people learned about Cabois Community School being destroyed by the earthquake through Christa Brelsford’s amazing story. They’re actually considering funding all costs involved in building a Learning Center/Shelter so that the children of Cabois and surrounding communities can continue their education. And, because the Learning Center/Shelter will be equipped with solar panel driven electricity and satellite Internet there’s going to be a leapfrog opportunity for students and teachers.
The possibilities are very exciting especially in light of the terribly challenging times for the people of Haiti. But, with good reason, the potential funder wants to make sure that the parents are ready to do their part to ensure the success of the school and their children’s education. Today in a meeting with teachers, community leaders and a dozen parents we addressed this question. I was EXTREMELY encouraged by ideas and commitments that emerged.

Cabois Community School Update
February 6, 2010
I (John Engle) and family returned from Haiti last night and arrived at our home in Vero Beach at 11:30 pm. Here’s a video that Kent and I did two days ago after visiting Cabois Community School, one of our partners. More footage of the school coming next week. It was completely devastated.

Piloting a “Partner School”
August 14, 2009
Here’s a quick video of Community School of Cabois (Lekòl Jean Jacques Dessaline) which is one of four partner schools that we’re piloting. We’ve been collaborating with school director and teachers in literacy projects for years before they had the vision to create this school. These teachers have worked without pay and worked with local masons to construct the building. The school’s director and two of the teachers are participating in our 3-year Capacity Building training.
Community School of Cabois will receive from Haiti Partners over the next 3 years funds to help finish the building, start a garden that is used to teach agricultural techniques and produce revenue for school, and to start a social enterprise toward making the school autonomous. Only 15% of schools in Haiti receive government funding. Thus, paying teachers’ salaries and other expenses involved is a major challenge. While Haitian families place high importance on education, the fees they’re able to pay are normally not enough to pay teachers’ salaries. Following the model of one of our partners, we’re creating a training module and pilots toward helping schools create social enterprises that generate revenue that can pay teachers’ salaries and other necessary school expenses.
