Dawn Richard Dances With Choir
August 29, 2010
Today, Hip Hop artist Dawn Richard visited WOZO, which is Haiti Partners youth choir and dance troupe. The kids were thrilled! Dawn, who has Haitian roots couldn’t have been more loving and fun. She connected with them deeply… laughing with them, applauding them, encouraging them, showing them a dance and learning a dance with them. We were truly blessed to have her. Thank you, Dawn. Thank you so much!
Her visit was filmed by Halogen TV as part of their Nobel Exchange series. Thank you Tamara and team for what you’re doing. We are honored to be a part of this.
Watch Dawn teach our choir a new dance and learn a dance from them here:

Choir Kids Cleaning Streets
July 27, 2010
Quick video of kids in Wozo, which is Haiti Partners’ Youth Choir, dumping trash they collected. They come to our (John and Merline’s) home every Saturday and Sunday afternoons to practice, learn and work on service projects. It’s wonderful to see how they’re learning to take responsibility, to make decisions together and to manage conflicts that arise. They’re also constantly improving as a choir and dance troupe.

Epic River Crossing
June 22, 2010
Yesterday our group from Silver Spring Presbyterian Church (Mechanicsburg, PA) traveled to Darbonne and Cabois with Haiti Partners Youth Choir. They connected with the students and teachers in song and stories. Great fun! The roads are washed out and with a bus for all 33 of us there was no way to cross the river except by foot. Some are not familiar with river crossing and were quite scared and emotional ; ). No one was hurt or swept away by river.

Wozo, Haiti Partners Youth Choir Ready to Tour!
April 20, 2010
Pro-music teacher/choir director, Kayla Werlin, who has coached our youth choir and director during her short yearly visits says they’re ready to perform in US. Very exciting!
Kayla is super impressed with progress they’ve made and is amazed by how quickly they learn new stuff. Here’s a short video that her friend, Jacob, filmed.
We’re excited! And, we’re looking for supporters, sponsors and organizers who might wish to help in bringing the choir for a tour in the US.

Haiti Partners Youth Choir NOT Singing
March 16, 2010
You’ve perhaps watched Haiti Partners Youth Choir dance and heard them sing. They’re still doing that regularly. But with more time on their hands because their schools have not yet started, they’re improving the community by cleaning roads. Among things that need to change in Haiti is littering. With no organized waste management system, the norm is for people to throw trash on streets. This means that even dirt roads like the ones in our neighborhood have litter everywhere. Haiti Partners Youth Choir is not only cleaning up litter but they’re also raising awareness about need to not litter.
While it may seem trivial during such challenging times, this touches on fundamental issues: protecting the environment, being good citizens, and working together as a community.

Song About Earthquake
February 28, 2010
Haiti Partners Youth Choir sings a song about earthquake and moving forward. This has been part of their processing of the event and it’s aftermath. Most of these kids lost their homes and are sleeping outside in makeshift shelters.
Here are the words:
Haiti is my country,
But she almost perished,
We can never abandon her,
She is our country,
Even though the earth shook
and the mountains split,
we still stand in hope,
Haiti has not perished,
Chorus: Haiti is my country, she almost perished. We will never abandon her because she is our country.

Haiti Partners Youth Choir and Dance Troupe
August 19, 2009
The neighborhood where I (John Engle) stay when I’m in Haiti and where I lived for more than 10 years is called Mariaman. It’s in the mountains outside of Port au Prince.
My wife Merline has been working with a group of young people for the last three years helping them to develop skills in singing, dancing and leadership. It’s now about a year since her brother Alex has served as director. He’s doing a fantastic job and many of their songs were written by him and the kids and have a social justice message. They’ve performed during Sunday am services in about a dozen Port au Prince churches and have done several concerts. Alex is a participant in our Capacity Building Project.
Merline and I are working with Alex and kids to determine what’s next. During summer break they’ve been learning to embroider, weave straw hats, etc. toward identifying some income generating activities. We’re also exploring the possibility of having them come perform in US to help raise funds for Haiti Partners work in education. Contributions to help support this choir and dance troupe initiative can be sent to Haiti Partners.

Haiti Partners Youth Choir and Dance Troupe
May 15, 2009
Here’s a powerful music video with our Haiti Children’s Choir, a group of 20 children in Mariaman, Haiti. This initiative is coordinated by Merline Engle, who works as a volunteer. The choir is thriving and has more invitations to sing in churches in the greater Port au Prince area than they’re able to respond to. And this choir is about so much more than singing and dancing. The kids have gained self-confidence and are learning to work through conflict and problems in constructive ways. Director, Alex Myril, uses Lectio Divina, a prayerful and participative method of Bible study in their sessions. Alex is part of a 3-year Haiti Partners leadership development program.
