Teacher Training

August 30, 2010

A week of training started today for the teachers and school directors of four of our partner schools. The very reputable teacher training firm, CAFT, is training teachers to use participative methods with the national curriculum. Four of their trainers are pictured below, including Director Linda Gershuny.
The three other schools that we partner with will also receive a full week of training during the month of September and before the school year starts on October 4.

We are grateful to our supporters who make first-rate training like this possible!

Singing is an important part of training in Haiti. Words of songs reinforce concepts being taught.  We hope you enjoy this short clip!

Kimberly Teaching English

August 15, 2010

We were all sad to see Kimberly Conrad leave Haiti today. What an extraordinary job she did integrating into her community and with her host family and helping students and teachers at Henri Christopher school (one of our partner schools) learn English. Thank you Kimberly for coming and engaging so wholeheartedly. We will miss you but look forward to growing the partnership with you!

Visioning and Strategizing With Partners

August 7, 2010

This past Wednesday we convened school principals, assistants and teacher representatives from our seven partner schools. These are 4 schools outside of Leogane (earthquake epicenter), one in Cite Soleil, one on Island of La Gonave, and one in mountains south of Port-au-Prince. The visioning, strategizing and prioritizing, not to mention fellowship, energized us all. Among the things we accomplished included a one page document defining our collective vision and goals, including skills and values that we will work to develop and nurture in our students.

We also created the year’s program of training for teachers and administrators, shared successes and challenges, and scheduled another meeting for December to review progress and address challenges. We can’t thank Haiti Partners’ supporters enough for investing in the country’s future–the education of children.

Schools of Students in XO Laptop project

April 9, 2010

I visited yesterday the XO laptop training of the children and mentors in Darbonne, Haiti. I couldn’t have been more impressed! The confidence of the mentors as they worked with the students and the confidence and pride of the students as the made those laptops do what they wanted them to made my heart sing. This truly is an opportunity to leapfrog forward in education for these children. Here are images of the schools where these children went before the earthquake:

Children in Partner Schools restart activities!

Children in three of our Partner Schools (that were destroyed by the earthquake) restarted their activities under tarps yesterday. The kids are singing, coloring, and other activities. Teachers are being paid to facilitate this, which helps the school children as well as the teachers’ families who have lost so much. It’s a great sign of rebuilding, and provides children a safe space to return to some routine and positive activities.

These will run for eight to ten weeks as the Learning Center Shelters are being built (see details here on the www.haitipartners.org homepage.

Here’s an 82-second video with two of the staff coordinating these activities–right on the spot where kids are now getting together for activities with their teachers:

Learning Centers/Shelters

February 12, 2010

Plans and design are being finalized, agreements made with communities, etc. We should be ready to break ground for 2 Learning Centers/Shelters by week of Feb 21. We’re optimistic that we’ll be able to start two more in March.

Thanks for keeping this in mind as you come across folks interested in Haiti. This seems like a great opportunity to leapfrog the education of children in Darbonne and Cabois and to provide a model for countless other communities and NGOs working to support children who have lost their schools. Piloting “Partner Schools”

August 27, 2009

Thanks to a grant from Vista Hermosa for our Social Enterprise for Advancing Quality Education project (click here), we are, among other things,  piloting 3 partner schools with the intent of creating an approach that can be replicated. Click here for the working draft of goals for Haiti Partners partner schools.

Significant Grant from Major Donor!

My colleagues and I (John Engle) are celebrating! Vista Hermosa, which is funding our 3-year Capacity Building Project just approved funding of 3 year proposal called Social Enterprise for Advancing Quality Education. We’re elated! Here’s a summary below. Click here to download proposal in PDF format.

Overall: Develop and promote good leadership, inspiring successes, innovative solutions and community commitment to quality education in Haiti by leveraging Vista Hermosa-funded Capacity Building3 Project.

I.   Create, distribute and promote a video documentary and companion booklet highlighting a success story of Haitian social enterprises that are funding six schools. This video will be made available in English, French, Spanish and Creole for widespread use in Haiti and elsewhere.

II.  In partnership with four Haitian schools, develop a “model school” approach for replication: teachers’ salaries funded by social enterprise, 50%+ students are girls, and curriculum including agriculture (community garden), participatory leadership, discussion-based education and social enterprise creation.

III. Design program to train groups of about 15 people in each of 25 communities, igniting their imaginations and equipping them with tools and knowledge for creating social enterprises for furthering education.

IV. Energize Mwen Renmen Peyi m initiative (“I Love My Country“), which is led by Haiti’s private business sector by: a) Providing material, programs and projects that further their cause (above 3 objectives), b) bring American business leaders to Haiti who are known for corporate responsibility/philanthropy for exchange, c) film their visits so that they can spread the word among their US contacts and networks about these exciting initiatives in Haiti.
